Jiu jitsu commonly know as BJJ, brazilian jiu jitsu, is a martial art system that focuses on grappling with emphasis on ground fighting. It was developed from Japanese Judo ground fighting fundamentals, which were in turn formed from the Japanese Samurai art of Jiu jitsu. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu eventually came to be its own defined combat sport through the innovations, practices, and adaptation of its practitioners. We practice Jiu Jitsu which focus more self defense than sport. However we do compete just for the fun of it.
Jiu Jitsu is founded on the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger, heavier opponent. Mostly by having technique, leverage to better apply joint locks and chokeholds to defeat the opponent. Jiu Jitsu is taught to military and police across the world for its reality based no nonsense approach. BJJ is most commonly seen in sport tournaments and in the world of MMA such as the ever popular UFC.
Sparring (commonly referred to as "rolling" within the community) and live drilling play a major role in training and the practitioner's development. This is considered a method for promoting physical fitness and building character, and a way of life by many of the people who practice it. In other words you learn the skills and change your lifestyle.
In our Teens & Adults BJJ program our students are systematically taught the art of grappling through takedowns and submission / positional control techniques that share overlapping principles, allowing a beginner to competently apply the techniques under pressure at an accelerated rate! We are more watchful over our students, stressing to them how important partner safety is. Because with out your partners you can get better. BJJ is not an easy martial art but nothing easy is worth having.
